QSound Labs and RAD Game Tools Announce Intent to
Provide Soft Q3D™ 2.0 Option for Pop Miles Sound System™
San Jose, CA - Game Developers Conference (GDC) -
March 18, 1999 - QSound Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ: QSND), a leading supplier of
3D audio solutions, and RAD Game Tools, supplier of the most popular
licensed audio software development kit (SDK), today announced their
intent to provide a soft Q3D™ 2.0 positional 3D audio engine, with EAX™-compatible
QEM™ environmental modeling, as a new audio rendering option for Miles
Sound System™ licensees
The QSound "3D provider" (plug-in) for Miles will empower game developers
to deliver a compelling interactive 3D audio experience, including
acoustic environment effects, to each and every end-user, irrespective of
their sound hardware configuration. Even plain stereo sound cards will be
able to support Q3D for both speakers and headphones
Prior to this development, QSound’s QMixer™ SDK was the exclusive means by
which programmers could incorporate soft Q3D directly into PC games. As
with QMixer, the new Q3D plug-in will be licensed directly to developers
by QSound Labs
"It’s a sincere pleasure to provide this new audio rendering option in
cooperation with RAD Game Tools," said Scott Willing, Manager of Technical
Information Services at QSound
"Both QMixer and the Miles Sound System have long and respected histories.
The SDK’s have always addressed somewhat different priorities and thus
tended to appeal to different markets within the game sound community.
Even so, many programmers have bemoaned the inability to exploit the
strengths of both products, and this new option goes a long way to filling
that ‘choice gap’. From the standpoint of QSound, RAD, and developers,
it’s unquestionably a win-win-win scenario," said Mr. Willing
"QSound is a heavyweight in 3D audio, so we’re extremely excited to offer
integrated support for this popular 3D technology," said Jeff Roberts of
RAD Game Tools. "The idea of a QSound soft 3D provider dovetails perfectly
with our Miles 3D audio philosophy, which is to provide maximum
flexibility, completeness, and, above all, developer choice in 3D game
audio solutions. Giving developers the ability to place QSound’s
low-overhead, high-quality 3D and soft reverb under control of the
well-established Miles API simply makes good sense to us. It’s going to
make a lot of folks happy."
The new Q3D provider for Miles is expected to be available in plenty of
time for Christmas 1999 game release schedules
